MANCHESTER, UK: With a refreshed visual identity and plenty on offer for orthodontic professionals over the next three days, the British Orthodontic Congress (BOC) has started today at the Central Convention Complex in Manchester. According to congress chair Richard Jones, who spoke to members of the dental press this morning, it will be one of the largest event in its history, which began 30 years ago with the first BOC held in Bournemouth.

Over 1,200 orthodontists and affiliated professionals are expected for the congress, which has over 60 scientific and clinical presentations on offer, as well as one of the UK’s largest trade exhibitions for orthodontic equipment and materials. Parallel to the main programme, there are a number of sessions on practice development and NHS commissioning, as well as some intended for allied health professionals.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, orthodontic consultant and British Orthodontic Society authority on retention Dr Simon Littlewood launched a new campaign that is aimed at emphasising the importance of wearing retainers for life. Based on research recently conducted in the US, which found that wearing retainers only short term will most likely result in retreatment, he said that it is imperative to make patients and general dentists more aware of the fact that teeth keep moving through life. Ensuring that teeth remain stable requires a combined effort of the orthodontist, general dental practitioner and staff, he said.

“Dentists can prepare their patients before they are sent to the orthodontist by informing them about the orthodontic treatment but also about retention. There is almost no point in proceeding with orthodontic treatment unless the patient is willing and able to commit to retention long term,” Littlewood explained.

The campaign, titled “Hold that Smile”, includes a number of videos and animations aimed at both dentists and patients that will be rolled out over the upcoming weeks and shared on social media platforms with the aim of generating a viral campaign.

Looking forward, Jones extended an invitation to the next BOC, which will be held at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in London from 27 to 29 September next year. It will be the first time that the event will be held in the capital, he said. Information about the programme and registration will be made available soon.
