LONDON, UK: Almost nine years in the making, the International Orthodontic Congress (IOC) returned to London yesterday with an impressive first day that saw thousands of specialists from all over the globe gathering at the ExCeL London Exhibition and Convention Centre to learn about the latest research and technology in their field. The meeting is expected to be one of the largest in orthodontics in Europe ever with up to 6,000 dental professionals participating in the event over the next few days.
In addition to a diverse scientific programme, over 80 manufacturers and providers of orthodontic products have the latest solutions and appliances on display. Many of these are being exhibited in Europe for the first time.
“The show has started incredibly. We were really surprised about the number of doctors that came to our stand and were interested in the products, particularly our Carriere Motion Appliance,” commented Nadine Martranchard, Associate Manager of International Marketing for Henry Schein Orthodontics.
London is hosting one of the world’s oldest dental conferences for the third time after the 1931 and 1973 meetings. This year’s edition is organised by the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO) in partnership with the British Orthodontic Society. As a première, the meeting saw Dr William DeKock, a founder of the WFO, receiving the first service award, which was created in his honour. “DeKock’s work has been substantial in establishing the federation and its 110 member societies as the voice of orthodontists,” remarked WFO President Dr Roberto Justus on the recognition.
“I have never been so proud to be British and a part of the World Federation of Orthodontists. This meeting brings together 6,200 colleagues from 90 countries around the world to celebrate all that is good about orthodontics,” Prof. Jonathan Sandler, chairman of the organising committee of the eighth IOC, told delegates and guests at the opening ceremony on Sunday.
The IOC will continue at the ExCeL until tomorrow. The WFO’s next meeting is scheduled for 2020 in Yokohama in Japan.
