LONDON, UK: Once regarded with scepticism, orthodontic treatment with clear aligners has enjoyed ever-increasing popularity during the course of the last ten years. Just a few weeks ago, market leader Align Technology, for example, announced that the four millionth patient had been treated with its Invisalign solution in London.

While the system was previously only available to specialists and a few select dentists, the company has recently extended the scope of the system to all general practitioners with the launch of Invisalign Go in the UK and other major markets. At an introductory seminar this week in London, over 50 dentists had the opportunity to have a first look at the solution and learn how it can complement their treatment offering.

Lead by dentist Dr Andy Toy, an East Midlands-based orthodontist and long-term Invisalign user, participants went through all the steps of the treatment process with Invisalign Go. This included taking photographic records (which was conducted as a hands-on exercise), case assessment and treatment planning with the ClinCheck software. Tips and tricks from this expert were also provided d.

According to Align, Invisalign Go was designed to treat mild crowding, spacing, orthodontic relapse and other aesthetic tooth misalignment cases. It is available for single-or dual-arch treatments, ranging from £650 to £875 in the UK. Users are able to easily identify suitable patients for treatment with case assessment software that, according to the company, can be fully integrated into an existing digital dental workflow and works both with polyvinyl siloxane impressions and with Align’s iTero Element intra-oral scanner, as well as 3M True Definition and CEREC Omnicam (Dentsply Sirona). Invisalign Go providers have all the tools for comprehensive treatment at their disposal, as well as a wealth of online educational resources, including webinars to support them in their first treatments.

Align promises that patients can achieve Invisalign smiles in as little as seven months with the solution.

“Invisalign Go makes it finally possible for the inexperienced general dentist to start to do simple and safe orthodontics,” Toy told Dental Tribune. “With it, he or she will be able to improve treatment, which is great because it makes Invisalign accessible to even more people. Current Invisalign providers will benefit too, as they are going to receive more qualified referrals from their general dental practitioner colleagues.”

Feedback from the participants of the course in London was fairly positive, according to Toy, who admitted that bringing a specialist treatment approach into general dentistry comes with its challenges.

“We have never tried to teach Invisalign to this type of dentist before. They were really cautious and not very experienced, and we have already changed the training programme quite considerably. However, they can really learn to use the solution through experience,” he said.

“There have been a number of cases submitted after the initial two courses in London and Birmingham this month,” he further stated. “That tells us that dentists are responding positively, whereas sometimes in other courses, one is lucky to see them after three months and one finds they haven’t really done anything. I think we have made a powerful start here.”
