LONDON, UK: Dr David Sarver, one of the world’s most prominent speakers on aesthetic dentistry, is set to present new data on the way in which one’s smile changes over one’s lifespan at the British Orthodontic Conference (BOC) 2018. The event, which is run by the British Orthodontic Society (BOS), is currently being held in London.
Sarver is generally regarded as one of the pioneers of smile design, having begun to develop his theories on aesthetic dentistry in the 1980s. His approach to orthodontics considers the long-term future of the patient’s smile, the aesthetic opportunities afforded by new materials and techniques and the relationship with the general dentist and how this improves patient outcomes. At BOC 2018, Sarver will showcase his clinical procedures as well as his working relationship with colleagues. According to Sarver, interdisciplinary care is a multi-medical and dental approach that goes beyond dentistry and incorporates plastic surgery.
Sarver believes an in-depth evaluation of the face—and the smile—is a necessary step to take before moving forward with orthodontic treatment. His enhanced approach to treatment planning led him to join the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, of which he is now a fellow. Sarver developed the OrthoTrac software in the 1990s and has lectured and written frequently about the role of the orthodontist in managing the treatment of all aspects of a patient’s facial appearance.
Commenting on his presentation at BOC 2018, Sarver said, “Teeth should never be considered in isolation from the mouth or the face, and always take account of the way the patient’s appearance will evolve. I will present new findings on how the smile changes over the decades and how that data has significant influence over our decision-making. I believe that the expansion of our knowledge in interdisciplinary treatment opens avenues for enhancement of our orthodontic treatment outcome.”
Jonathan Sandler, BOS President, expressed his enthusiasm for having a speaker of Sarver’s stature, saying, “British orthodontists have a keen interest in David Sarver’s approach to the long-term future of the patient’s smile. In the UK, relationships with referring dentists are well established and I am optimistic that David’s insights will benefit multidisciplinary teamwork in the interests of patients.”
Sarver’s presentation, titled “Interdisciplinary care—aesthetics for a lifetime”, will be held in the Churchill Auditorium at 1:50 p.m. on Friday, 28 September. Further information about BOC 2018 can be found here.
