LONDON, UK: Prof. Jonathan Sandler is the next president of the British Orthodontic Society (BOS), the organisation has announced. The 60-year old orthodontic consultant from Chesterfield will be assuming his new role in January and lead the specialist body for the next three years.

Sandler is succeeding Dr Alison Murray from Derby who has served as the BOS president since 2015, but will step down at the end of the year. In an initial statement, Sandler praised the presidency as the pinnacle of his professional career and promised to help find the next generation of members with the talent and ability to help the BOS thrive for the benefit of professionals and patients alike.

As a Consultant Orthodontist at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, Sandler has built an impressive international reputation as a clinician and researcher, having co-authored over 120 scientific papers over the last 25 years. As chairman, he was fundamental in organising the successful 8th International Orthodontic Conference in London in 2015. Currently, he also holds the position of Chairman of the International Committee of the BOS, which represents the organisation at the European Federation of Orthodontic Societies’ annual meetings. He is also one of three UK diplomates of the European Board of Orthodontics.

Reflecting on his career, Sandler said: “I have contributed to the work of the society throughout my entire professional life, which has been the source of enormous professional satisfaction. I have had the opportunity to work with many truly amazing individuals, who are all prepared to give up tens and sometimes hundreds of hours, solely for the benefit of the entire orthodontic community and asking little or nothing in return.”

In addition to the changes in presidency, David Birnie from Newcastle Upon Tyne Dental Hospital will take over the position of Honorary Patron from Alison Newlyn. Birnie said he hopes to work closely with Sandler to find ways to serve BOS members better and promote the society’s upcoming conference in London.
