MONMOUTH, UK: The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) will celebrate a quarter of a century of promoting the study and practice of orthodontics at its next conference, scheduled for 19–21 September in Glasgow. In a press release detailing confirmed highlights from the programme, the organisers pointed out that the largest orthodontics event for UK dental professionals promises something for everyone.

Taking place under the theme “Looking Ahead”, the British Orthodontic Conference (BOC) 2019 will feature a diverse programme of lectures given by speakers from the UK and abroad. This year’s event will also feature parallel sessions on “Driving your private practice”, which the BOS said will be of interest to all dental care professionals, including those considering a career in orthodontics.

The BOS said the prestigious Northcroft memorial lecture will be given by Prof. Greg Huang from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in the US, who will present results from an adult anterior open bite study conducted by the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network. Other confirmed highlights include lectures by Dr Jay Bowman from the US on keeping mini-screws in place and improving the predictability of clear aligners. Dr Peter Miles from Australia will present a talk titled “The agony and ecstasy of Invisalign”, and former MP Lembit Öpik will join Dr Michael Millwaters, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, to discuss his own personal orthognathic case and experience.

A pre-conference course programme, taking place on 18 September, will see Prof. Susan Cunningham, Dr Justin Shute and Prof. Tim Newton discussing the psychology of orthodontics, with Prof. Hilary Bekker and Dr Sophy Barber speaking about decision-making. The TED Talks, scheduled for 21 September, will address a broad range of topics that will be of interest to all of the orthodontic team.

Dr David Waring, who took over as chair of the organising committee this year, said he is delighted to welcome such renowned international speakers. “We have a pre-conference course on the psychology of orthodontics and decision-making, two parallel sessions, a DCP [dental care professionals] programme and excellent social events for which the BOC has become famous. We feel that we have something for everyone at this year’s conference and we look forward to welcoming you all,” he commented.

Interested parties are advised to register before 30 June in order to receive an early bird discount. More information can be found on the society’s website: www.bos.org.uk.
