LONDON, UK: As digital dentistry becomes more commonplace, the relationship between dentists and dental laboratories seems set to grow. A new research report released by Market Research Engine has forecast a compound annual growth rate of 6 per cent for the global dental laboratory market until 2024, reaching a predicted value of US$43 billion (approximately £33.47 billion) by that point.
According to Market Research Engine, a global market research and consulting firm based in Florida, U.S., the growth in this market will be driven in part by an increase in the size of the global geriatric population and their expanding need for dentures and other dental prosthetic solutions. The number of people worldwide over the age of 65 has been projected by the World Health Organization to grow from an estimated 524 million in 2010 to 1.5 billion in 2050, bringing with it an associated increase in edentulism.
Other reasons for the prospective growth forecast in the report include an increase in outsourcing of dental prosthetic manufacturing to dental laboratories and a rise in the incidence of dental caries and other oral diseases.
In the UK, the Dental Laboratories Association (DLA) is the primary professional body for dental laboratory owners. It aims to represent effectively the interests of its members and to provide a range of professional services to support and develop their businesses. The DLA has around 1,000 members, which it estimates are responsible for over 80 per cent of the total dental laboratory services performed in the UK.
The report, titled Dental Lab Market By Type (Bridges, Crowns, Dentures); By Equipment (Dental Milling Equipment, Dental Scanners, Furnaces, Dental Articulators); By Material (Metal-ceramics, Ceramics) and by Regional Analysis—Global Forecast by 2017–2024, was published online in July 2018 and can be purchased here.
