LONDON, UK: A number of prominent names have once again made it onto the 2018 New Year Honours list, including the first British astronaut, Helen Sharman, former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. Among these high-profile entries, five UK dental professionals have also been recognised in the annually published list.

The head of the University of Glasgow’s Dental School, Prof. Jeremy Bagg, was awarded for his service to education, among other nominations. In this prestigious category, he received an Officer of the Order of the British Empire alongside singer Marc Almond and broadcaster Eamonn Holmes. Bagg has been heading the dental school in Glasgow for over 25 years.

Among the five honours awarded to dental professionals are also Members of the Order of the British Empire that were given to Wendy Jane Smith, strategic lead for community engagement at Plymouth University’s Peninsula School of Dentistry for her service to oral healthcare and dental education in the South West, senior dental nurse Gillian Ward from Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, as well as Heart Your Smile trustee and former chief dental officer of Denplan Roger Matthews.

For her service to oral health, clinical fellow Yasmin Allen from London was awarded a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire.

Since 1980, the Crown recognises the achievements and service of people across the UK. On this year’s list, over 1,100 recipients, who were selected from nominations made by the public, were awarded.
