BELFAST, UK: At the Oral Health Conference currently being held in Belfast, the winners of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) Poster Competition were announced today. The first prize went to University of Newcastle’s School of Health Sciences lecturer Kay Franks for her poster on the entry knowledge of Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy students on diet, nutrition and preventative oral health care.
Members of the BSDHT submitted their posters for this year’s competition, which was open to all dental hygienists and dually qualified dental hygienists and therapists, and dental hygiene and therapy students and educators, over the last few months. They were asked to produce a poster summarising their own individual or group research projects, or other key areas of oral health and hygiene that they feel passionately about.
According to BSDHT President Michaela O’Neill, this year’s contest saw an increased number of entries from students. The contest was again supported by oral care specialist Waterpik.
“We have been working with the BSDHT for a long time to put this research programme together. It has been a delight to have been involved,” commented the company’s Director of Professional and Clinical Affairs, Deborah Lyle, today.
O’Neill said that the competition recognises the invaluable contribution that both dental hygienists and those dually qualified in dental hygiene and therapy make in the world of dental research.
“We have seen some wonderful pieces put together for the poster competition this year which demonstrate a remarkable contribution and level of commitment to oral health and hygiene. I hope this competition, now and long into the future, will continue to encourage our profession to become active in exploring aspects of their work or related areas,” she said.
