LANCASHIRE, UK: The British Association of Dental Nurses (BADN) has released a provisional programme for its annual National Dental Nursing Conference, to be held at the Blackpool Hotel, Conference Centre and Spa on 16 and 17 November. The event is open to members of the BADN, students of dental nursing and any other interested dental professionals.

Dr Eric Rooney, the Deputy Chief Dental Officer of England, will open the conference in his role as keynote speaker. The British Dental Industry Association’s Chief Executive, Edmund Proffitt, will outline what the association is and does, summarise the regulatory and legal issues relating to manufacturers and suppliers of dental devices and instruments, and alert attendees to the potential risks involved in purchasing and using counterfeit or non-compliant dental equipment.

Andrew Gilliver, Pride in Practice Coordinator at the LGBT Foundation, is also scheduled to present. His presentation will aim to provide conference attendees with an understanding of the barriers faced by LGBT patients when accessing dental care. His presentation will also create awareness of how to support these patients and detail how the LGBT Foundation can offer ongoing support to practices in this respect.

In addition, two speakers will be sharing their personal stories of life-changing experiences. Chris Curtis, chairman of the Swallows Head and Neck Cancer Charity, will discuss his battle with throat cancer in his presentation “From cancer to the palace in six years”. Through the loss of her 1-year-old son William to Sepsis, Melissa Mead, ambassador for the UK Sepsis Trust, will aim to broaden attendees’ knowledge and understanding of sepsis, while looking at the role that one can play in reducing the number of avoidable deaths in her presentation “Together we can beat sepsis”.

The National Dental Nursing Conference will offer 8 hours of verifiable continuing professional development over its two days. Dental nurses and all other members of the dental team are invited to attend either day or both days. A discounted rate for current BADN members and for students of dental nursing applies.
