LONDON, UK: The British Dental Association (BDA) has announced the election results for its Principal Executive Committee (PEC) for the 2019-21 triennium. Dr Paul Blaylock, Dr Peter Crooks, Dr Nigel Jones, Dr Mick Armstrong and Dr Paul Woodhouse were the successful candidates and, as such, will take up their mandate on 1 January 2019 alongside the current ten members of the PEC.
As the BDA’s equivalent of a board of directors, the PEC guides the trade union’s strategies, priorities and finances. Elections to the PEC take place each year, with five of its 15 seats open to nominations. Though voting for four of the seats is restricted to BDA members who live in those particular regions, the fifth available seat is always UK-wide so that all eligible members can put themselves forward as a possible candidate.
Blaylock has been re-elected to represent the Northern region on the PEC, a role he has filled since the PEC’s formation in 2012. Likewise, Jones has represented the South West region on the PEC since 2012, while Woodhouse was elected to the UK-wide position on the PEC in 2015.
Although this is Crooks’ first time being elected as a representative of Northern Ireland on the PEC, he has previously been a member of the BDA’s Review Body Evidence Committee and served as Chair of the Northern Ireland Dental Practice Committee.
Armstrong is a familiar name to all BDA members, given that he has held the role of BDA Chair since April 2014. During this time, he has also been elected to senior positions within the Council of European Dentists and the Dental Practice Committee of the World Dental Federation.
