LONDON, UK: More than 320,000 students at UK-based higher institutions have taken part in the 2018 National Student Survey, an anonymous survey that gathers feedback regarding students’ undergraduate experiences. Of the 16 dental schools included, four have been shown to have a 100 per cent satisfaction rate with the course quality by their students.

Conducted annually, the National Student Survey aims to provide an unfiltered view of how British tertiary students feel about the teaching, assessment and feedback, learning opportunities, academic support and learning resources that they have received at their educational institution. For an institution’s final survey results to be made publicly available, at least half of its final-year undergraduate students must complete the questionnaire.

The dental schools of the University of Plymouth, University of Aberdeen, University of Sheffield and Queen’s University Belfast were all found to have a 100 per cent satisfaction rate among their students. Furthermore, students were able to either “agree” or “strongly agree” that they were, overall, satisfied with the quality of the course. In this regard, 96 per cent of Plymouth students answered with “strongly agree”, compared with 89 per cent of those at Aberdeen, 81 per cent at Belfast and 63 per cent at Sheffield.

“We are incredibly proud of everyone within the school, students and staff alike, as this year’s National Student Survey results show we’re all working together brilliantly to help prepare the next generation of dentists,” said Prof. Christopher Tredwin, Head of the University of Plymouth’s Peninsula Dental School.

“Having such positive responses and a high response rate shows how we are continually engaging with our students, as well as working alongside them to ensure they get the best learning experience possible,” he continued.

"The [University of Aberdeen's] Institute of Dentistry was delighted to receive such positive feedback from its BDS students in the latest NSS results," said Prof. Richard Ibbetson, Director of the aforementioned Institute of Dentistry.

"We place great emphasis on seeking to provide a positive learning experience and this is enhanced by both the skill and dedication of our staff and the quality of our students. The relatively small size of our cohorts gives an opportunity to work closely with our students to ensure that they gain maximum benefit from their degree programme. Having achieved this high rating in the NSS, our focus is to maintain and improve as we go forward.”

Though the full results of the survey are not yet publicly available, further information about it can be found here.
