LONDON, UK: One of the oldest working NHS dental practitioners in Chelmsford and the UK has passed away in a London hospital four months after being hit by an ambulance on a 999 call near his practice in Danbury. The emergency vehicle collided with 77-year-old Michael Daly on a traffic light crossing after leaving his practice shift in the afternoon of 4 February this year and he then fell on to another car.
After life-saving treatment from the ambulance crew, he had to be airlifted to St George’s Hospital in Tooting in south London, where he received treatment for a serious head injury until last Friday.
A police investigation into the accident is still underway.
Originally from Ireland, Daly received his training both at University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin. At the time of the accident, he worked as a dentist at Oasis Care Dental in Danbury. Prior to that he worked as a dentist for the New London Road practice in Chelmsford.
According to the Essex Chronicle, he served as a dentist and parole officer for Chelmsford prisoners in the 1980s.
Daly leaves behind his wife of 47 years and two adult children.
“Michael was always kind and gentle with myself, family, friends and his patients. He will be sorely missed,” his wife told the newspaper.
