LONDON, UK: More dental professionals than ever have received governmental honours according to the New Year Honours list published by the Cabinet Office last week. The Queen awarded Scotland’s former Chief Dental Officer Ray Watkins of Callander, among a number of dentists, public dental health experts and educators.
A consultant for dental public health at NHS Grampian, Watkins received the honours for his services to health care.
He served as Chief Dental Officer for Scotland between 1997 and 2007.
Also awarded were Prof. Jennifer Elizabeth Gallagher, Professor of Oral Health Strategy at King’s College London, dental public health specialist Dr Gillian Davies from Manchester, as well as dentist Shazad Saleem from Oldham.
COPDEND Dean of Postgraduate Dentistry Elizabeth Jones received the honours for her accomplishments in the field of dental education.
Overall, this year's list recognised 1,164 people for their achievements, including prominent public figures, such as actress Kristin Scott Thomas, fashion designer Mary Quant and the world’s oldest marathon runner, Fauja Singh.
