MANCHESTER, UK: Oral health care product manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has launched a new toothpaste under its Sensodyne Rapid Relief brand to the UK market. Featuring an improved formula, the latest version promises even faster relief from dentine hypersensitivity, the company said.
Introduced this morning at the British Dental Conference and Exhibition in Manchester, the new Sensodyne Rapid Relief is claimed to reduce pain resulting from exposed dentinal tubules in just 60 seconds. According to GSK, its water-lacking formulation includes bioadhesive polymers that, when in contact with saliva during toothbrushing, instantly form a barrier over the exposed dentine. From there, stannous fluoride ions penetrate the open ends of the tubules to as deep as 80 μm.
In vitro studies conducted by GSK in 2016 demonstrated that, after just one application, the new Sensodyne Rapid Relief provided not only rapid occlusion but also a 127 per cent reduction in the flow of fluid through the tubules when compared with the previous fluoride formulation.
“Sensodyne Rapid Relief beats sensitivity pain fast by enhancing the adhesiveness of the product on the tooth surface. This helps deliver the stannous fluoride effectively, allowing it to get to work really fast,” explained Dr David Urquhart, research and development lead of sensitivity and acid erosion at GSK.
GSK said that the new formulation establishes ongoing protection that is resistant to exposure to dietary acids with every brush. This way, Sensodyne Rapid Relief helps to support the management of dentine hypersensitivity over the long term.”According to various studies, the condition currently occurs in between one to three in ten patients. If not treated, it can have a significantly negative impact on quality of life and oral health because patients avoid dental checks in fear of pain.
GSK launched the first version of its sensitivity toothpaste in 2010. The brand currently holds a significant market share in this particular segment in the UK and in markets around the world. The new Sensodyne Rapid Relief is now available in retail stores nationwide.
