LONDON, UK: A greater number of homeless people in the UK than ever has been reported this year, according to the government, with London far ahead in the worrying figures. For its temporary support centre in the capital, national charity Crisis has recently called on dental professionals to provide treatment for those in need at Christmas.
“This year has seen an alarming rise in the number of rough sleepers in England, all of whom deserve the shelter, companionship and support many of us take for granted at Christmas. That’s why the compassion and dedication of Crisis at Christmas volunteers is needed more than ever,” Crisis Chief Executive Jon Sparkes said.
Sparkes invited dentists, dental nurses and hygienists to volunteer for this year’s service, which will run from 23 to 30 December. Registration is now open on the charity’s website.
Last year saw 393 dental consultations with 201 guests receiving treatment in Crisis centres across the country. Overall, 4,562 guests in London, Edinburgh and Newcastle were supported by almost 9,000 Crisis volunteers in 2014. For this year’s campaign, the charity has announced the opening of centres in Birmingham and Coventry. In addition to medical treatment and warm meals, homeless people will be given specialist advice at the centres on accessing housing, securing work and claiming benefits.
“By helping to make Christmas happen for homeless people, volunteers can not only bring some much-needed cheer to our guests but also set them up with the chance to have a more positive year ahead through the life-changing services at our Crisis Skylight centres,” Sparkes said.
