LONDON – The national regulator of dental practice in the UK, the General Dental Council (GDC), has fined Luis Fairman, the creator of the metal teeth of infamous James Bond villain Jaws. The GDC stated that it prosecuted him because he unlawfully used the title of dental technician.

Fairman’s company, Precision Dental Technology, a supplier of metals and plastics to the dental industry, leapt into fame in 1977 when its laboratory was chosen to manufacture the metal teeth worn by actor Richard Kiel in the James Bond films “The Spy Who Loved Me” and “Moonraker”.

On 8 May, Fairman appeared before the court and pleaded guilty for posing as a dental technician in a YouTube video, although he has never been registered with the GDC, thus breaching the Dentists Act 1984. By law, all dental professionals, including dental technicians, must be registered with the GDC to work in the UK.

Fairman was fined £500 (€612) and ordered to pay a £50 (€61) victim surcharge. In addition, he must pay costs of £500 to the GDC.
