LONDON, UK: In its latest market report, global research firm Technavio forecasts that the global dental diagnostic and surgical equipment market will exceed US$7.5 billion (€6,7 billion) by 2020. According to the analysts, key factors underlying this prediction are the rising demand for oral care, an increasing number of dentists, and the growing edentulous population and incidence of oral disease.

Predicting a compound annual growth rate of 5 per cent for the dental diagnostic and surgical equipment segment, the report identified the benefits of advanced dentistry as pivotal for the positive development. According to the analysts, efficient oral care, such as minimally invasive procedures, early detection of caries with new laser equipment, treatment of periodontal disease and professional tooth cleaning, will increase the number of patients and dental visits, thereby driving the growth of the field.

In addition, the report forecasts that the increasing number of dentistry education programmes will lead to a rise in dental school enrolments and therefore surge the number of general dentists and specialists, specifically periodontists, in the years to come.

Advancing this trend is increasing oral health awareness reinforced through oral health campaigns by governments and private organisations. “These initiatives will create awareness among the global population, generating a high demand for oral care and implants, thus driving the growth of the global dental diagnostic and surgical equipment market,” said Barath Palada, Technavio lead analyst for orthopaedics and general medical device research.

Furthermore, the demand for budget oral care is likely to boost the dental market globally, Palada added. “Countries like Turkey, Hungary, India, and South Korea are gaining popularity as medical tourism destinations among people seeking low-cost dental care procedures.”
