PAISLEY, UK: The General Dental Council has removed a Scottish dentist from the register because he failed to disclose his HIV status to authorities. Along with Sweden, France, Canada and New Zealand, for instance, the UK permits HIV-positive health care workers to practise if they are registered and medically monitored every three months.
As reported by news service PinkNews, the dentist from Paisley was suspended over dishonest conduct when he failed to disclose his HIV status. More than 10,000 former patients who visited the surgery have been given blood tests; however, the health board is still tracing 500 patients who have moved away from the area. So far, none of the tested persons have been found to have been infected with the virus at the dental practice.
Up to 100,000 people in the UK are living with HIV. Around half of them are unaware that they are infected, according to PinkNews.
