LONDON, UK: Late last year, a report by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA), which oversees all regulatory bodies for health professions in the UK, identified a number of governance issues at the General Dental Council (GDC). In a recent post published on the council’s website, head of the GDC William Moyes has acknowledged deficits and announced a number of changes to address these issues.
He said an action plan was formulated after meetings with council representatives and it will be presented to the public this week.
“We do not challenge the PSA’s findings, and we accept all their recommendations,” he wrote in the post. “Many of these issues had already been tackled by the GDC or planning how to tackle them was well-advanced. But there were some new issues identified by the PSA that required further thought.”
Moyes advised that, since a report on an investigation into a whistle-blower’s complaint first identified problems at the GDC in 2013, his organisation has already introduced improvements, including a training programme for Investigating Committee staff, as well as ongoing monitoring of training and development.
He also reported that the GDC has improved governance, but did not provide specifics.
“We will not rest on our laurels until we have much better systems and processes so that we can work towards being a high performing, efficient regulator in the future.”
Moyes has come under heavy scrutiny for the report and been called on to resign by the British Dental Association, among others. He has headed the GDC since 2013.
