DUBLIN, Ireland: The operators of a medical online search engine have reported an increasing interest in invisible aligners following rumours about Kate Middleton having worn aligners. Their figures indicate an increase of about 36 per cent with regard to visitors interested in Invisalign.

In October and November 2011, the web portal WhatClinic.com had approximately 4,200 visitors from the UK researching various braces treatments. More than1,100 (26 per cent) of these were searching for information about Invisalign.

After the Daily Mail reported that the Duchess of Cambridge had had her teeth straightened by a UK dentist using invisible braces at the end of last year, the website operators noticed a rise in searches by users looking for similar procedures. In January and February, they counted almost 5,100 visits from the UK for braces treatments, with about 1,500 (29 per cent) of these interested in Invisalign.

According to these statistics, there was a 26 per cent increase in searches for braces of any kind, and interest in Invisalign, a type of invisible braces, increased by 36 per cent from December 2011 to March 2012.

Caelen King, CEO of WhatClinic.com, said that this kind of treatment is an area in dentistry that looks set to boom in the coming years as consumers become savvier about the types of braces available to them.

Established in 2007, WhatClinic.com is an Internet search engine where users can find and compare medical and dental clinics and services at home and abroad.

Research on Google search queries from the UK did not reflect this trend, Dental Tribune found.
