LONDON, UK: The British Dental Association (BDA) has recognised the work of fourteen UK-based dentists with its annual Honours and Awards. The dentists were selected based on their outstanding achievements in addition to their commitment to the BDA and the dental profession as a whole.
For his contributions to dental academia over the past 35 years, Prof. Paul Speight was awarded the John Tomes Medal. An internationally renowned figure for his dental research and work on oral and maxillofacial pathology, Speight has worked as both an educator and researcher in his roles as Dean and Head of Department at the University of Sheffield’s School of Clinical Dentistry.
Prof. Helen Worthington was also honoured with the John Tomes Medal for her work in advocating for evidence-based oral healthcare. As the Director of Evidence for Practice at the University of Manchester’s School of Dentistry, Worthington’s work has impacted policy and clinical practice numerous times in the UK, and she is responsible for developing a methodology for systematic reviewing and randomised controlled trials in primary dental care.
Other recipients of awards included Dr Dipesh Kothari, a London-based general dental practitioner, who became the second recipient to ever be awarded the BDA Joy Harrild Award for Young Dentists. In addition, Dr Claudette Christie, the BDA’s former Northern Ireland Director of 15 years, was honoured with Life Membership in recognition of her long career with the association.
“We are delighted to announce these fourteen honours and awards recipients,” said Dr Martin Woodrow, Acting Chief Executive of the BDA. “It's great to see the breadth of recipients from across the profession—and those supporting the profession—reflecting the excellent range of nominations we received.”
“Once again, in 2019, we want to find dentists who have shown a commitment to advancing dentistry. We strongly encourage nominations from all areas of the profession. Please consider nominating any colleague you think deserves recognition for what they do."
