LONDON, UK: The deadline for UK-based dental care professionals (DCPs) to make their annual or end-of-cycle continuing professional development (CPD) statement is now less than a week away, but more than 5,000 DCPs are yet to make their submission. As a result, the General Dental Council (GDC) has strongly encouraged DCPs to make their statement by 28 August or risk being removed from the register and becoming unable to practise in the UK.
The introduction of the enhanced CPD programme in 2018 brought with it a requirement that all registered DCPs make an annual statement entailing how many hours of CPD they have completed in the previous 12 months, as well as a declaration that the completed CPD is relevant to their area of practice. In addition, dental professionals are required to include a personal development plan and must ensure that their statement is complete and accurate.
All DCPs must make an annual CPD statement, unless he or she is at the end of his or her five-year cycle, at which point an end-of-cycle statement must be made.
“This is the first time that the annual statement has been a requirement for DCPs and with so many yet to make their submission, we’re calling on professionals and employers alike to ensure that no one loses their licence to practise through non-compliance,” said Gurvinder Soomal, Executive Director of Registration and Corporate Resources at the GDC.
“If anyone is avoiding making the statement due to concerns over insufficient CPD hours, this is a reminder that a ‘zero hours’ statement can be made, as long as the minimum number of required hours are made up over the next 12 months,” Soomal added.
The quickest and easiest way to make the annual statement is through the self-service registrant website eGDC, according to the regulator, since it only takes around 5 minutes to set up an account. The GDC provides further guidance and information about enhanced CPD on its website.
