LONDON, UK: The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) has revealed the four thought-provoking papers selected for the OrthoTED session at the upcoming British Orthodontic Conference (BOC) in London. The presenters will deliver their talks on the last day of the conference, 29 September. The society also announced that it has extended the early bird deadline to 12 August.
Inspired by the successful online TED Talks with the slogan “Ideas worth spreading”, the orthodontic versions will straddle orthodontic technology, education and design. The presentations were chosen through a competitive process that solicited ideas for short and dynamic talks.
In “Artificial intelligence (AI) will not replace orthodontists. But will orthodontists who use AI replace those who don’t?”, Dr Grant Duncan from The Invisible Orthodontist—a group of orthodontists across Australia who provide invisible treatment solutions to adults, teens and children—will talk about the introduction of AI applications into the specialty to monitor treatment progress.
Grant Isherwood will present a talk titled “Learning from bed—Teaching orthodontics using the ‘flipped classroom’ method of teaching”. This instructional approach has been shown to produce both better examination results and higher satisfaction among students across a wide range of disciplines, such as economics and life sciences. Isherwood is a second-year registrar in orthodontics at the Royal Liverpool University Dental Hospital.
Dr Ian Hutchinson, a specialist orthodontist from Chepstow, will discuss the interesting results of a simple experiment on dental irregularities, in “Seeing what your patients see—The art of visual deception”. He will demonstrate a simple approach for orthodontists to see what the patients see and in this way identify their concerns and provide corrective treatment, making for satisfied patients.
Addressing efficiency in practice, Dr Ross Hobson, a well-known clinical orthodontist from Newcastle, will introduce practical techniques to improve efficiency in the workplace with five key points, among them an emphasis on good decision-making. Hobson will stress the importance of being decisive and empowering staff to make decisions in order to employ their abilities to the maximum.
Commenting on the OrthoTED session, BOC Chairman Dr Richard Jones said: “TED Talks have taken the business world by storm and, for the first time, we’re delighted to be offering our own unique version with these four engaging presentations. They cover a diverse variety of topics which are sure to inspire and entertain.”
The early bird deadline for BOC 2018 has been extended to 12 August. Registration and congress details can be found here.
