BIRMINGHAM, UK: Glass ionomer cement has been used as a dental restorative material for many years. Its properties include an aesthetic appearance, easy bonding and continuous release of fluoride that prevents tooth decay around the filling material. However, one of the main disadvantages has been the insufficient strength and relatively low abrasion resistance. With Ketac Universal Aplicap, 3M ESPE has introduced a new glass ionomer with high compressive strength.
The Ketac Universal Aplicap glass ionomer exhibits a higher surface hardness than comparable materials, making it a reliable choice for long-term and stress-bearing Class I and Class II restorations, among other indications. Since the material eliminates preconditioning of the cavity and coating, dentists can place and sculpt the material in one simple step. In addition, it offers low stickiness to instruments, making placement easier.
Fluoride is released continuously for 24 months, while the new design of the nozzle allows better access to deep cavities. It takes less than 10 seconds for the RotoMix unit to prepare the material, including activation and mixing of the triturated capsule.
“Ketac Universal Aplicap is the latest development in a long history of proven glass ionomer technology from 3M Oral Care. It offers easy handling and reduces chair time with a simple one-step placement,” said Amy Driver, marketing executive at 3M Oral Care, at the product launch on the first day of the Dentistry Show. “The material can be used without a conditioner and protective glaze to reduce the treatment time. Patients can eat and drink within 10 minutes after the application. Ketac Universal Aplicap shows gentle preparation and excellent sealing of the margins of the filling.”
