LONDON, UK: Practices and organisations operating under NHS contracts are not required to submit a statement of financial viability to the Care Quality Commission (CQC). According to the organisation, only new providers offering full private services will have to comply with the new rule.
The statement comes after the British Dental Association asked for clarification of the new requirement, which was originally announced in the latest CQC monthly bulletin. It requires new providers applying for registration to submit a statement of financial viability via a specialist.
With the change, the commission aims to streamline assessment of an applicant’s compliance with Regulation 13, which requires applicants to ensure they take all reasonable steps to meet the financial demands of providing safe and appropriate services.
While full private providers or private providers who make changes to their registration, such as adding a partner or location, are required to comply with the new rule, practices, dentists or urgent care services doing any work for the NHS are exempted, the CQC has now confirmed.
“If a provider has a contract to provide NHS services, we will take that as assurance of financial viability for the purposes of our registration assessment. We will not require details of any breakdown of the proportion of public/private work,” the commission stated. It further promised to issue a full clarification to all providers soon.
More information about the new requirement and templates for a statement letter are available on the CQC’s website.

Does anyone else see the almost Pythonesque laughable stupidity of a bankrupt NHS, which is strangling funds out of dental services up and down the country, telling its dental contractors that they do not have to furnish evidence of their financial viability? How very kind of them. If they insisted on that kind of evidence, a dental practitioner might feel inclined to ask for similar evidence from the NHS. I certainly would, knowing full well they cannot provide it. The NHS is a busted flush and some of us have known about it for years.
