LONDON, UK: The number of adults in the UK seeking orthodontic treatment continues to rise, survey figures from the British Orthodontic Society (BOS) have shown. Members of the organisation recently said in the survey that they now treat 5 per cent more private patients than they did in 2016.
While demand for clear aligners has increased further, the most recommended treatment option has remained fixed appliances, they also said.
Among the growing cohort of patients were an increasing number of men. However, the survey showed that adult patients were typically women in the 26–40 age bracket, often influenced in their decision by celebrities or bloggers.
“It’s gratifying to see the number of adults interested in orthodontic treatment continuing to rise,” commented Dr Richard George, BOS Director of External Relations, on the results. “If you are interested in treatment for yourself, it’s important to seek an opinion from a professional who has the training and skill to diagnose and treat a variety of orthodontic issues.”
“Our members, specialists and dentists with a special interest, offer a range of options for adults, enabling them to provide a solution to any kind of orthodontic problem. The value of choice cannot be overestimated,” he added.
The survey, released for National Smile Month, was conducted among a quarter of BOS members. The majority of the respondents provide conventional fixed appliances and clear aligners, but only every third places lingual appliances.
