At ResMed, we are excited to announce the addition of five new design variations to Narval CC, our mandibular repositioning device. When we developed the first-ever CAD/CAM oral appliance for the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, our biggest ideas went into our smallest device.
Narval CC continues to revolutionise oral appliance therapy with its advanced technology, its proven track record in terms of compliance and efficacy, as well as its compact, lightweight design. We have now expanded on this design to offer even more individualisation and to allow more patients with even the most challenging oral morphologies to be treated. When we developed the first device, we followed a patient-centric design process, continually collecting feedback directly from the wearer. From this arose a vestibular band design that was close to teeth, but not touching them, thus providing unparalleled comfort. This also meant that the more sensitive anterior teeth were never used for retention.
Since the number of dental sleep specialists and patients we supply is continually increasing, the demand for other forms has grown. Therefore, we have introduced five new designs for various indications and tooth morphologies. In addition to the vestibular band, we now offer a design that covers all of the teeth, as well as one that partially covers the teeth both on the buccal and on the lingual surfaces. There is even a design that follows the palatal/lingual morphology, but has little or no material on the facial surfaces of the anterior teeth. The exciting thing is that these options can be applied independently on the upper and lower splints.
The response to the new designs has been overwhelmingly positive, with many new customers joining the Naval user community to try out the different designs.
“We continue to listen to market feedback while evolving our product to offer patient-centric comfort, give dentists a dental sleep physician’s unrivalled choice and to offer the benefit of Narval CC even in the most challenging of cases,” commented Ross Phillips, Commercial Director of Narval Europe.
“At the same time, we also took the opportunity to adopt the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine guidelines and changed our contraindications to focus on the anchoring value of the teeth rather than on the number of teeth in the mouth,” he added. “All this will enable to dentist to achieve the best possible outcomes for every patient.”
As with all new products, it is important that the dental sleep physician use the newest order form, which has a simple visual check box for each available design. Our CAD/CAM design team, based in Lyon in France, will apply the design requested—assuming the design will work in that particular instance. If no design is indicated on the new order form, we will revert back to the original vestibular band design.
