GERRARDS CROSS, UK: The British Endodontic Society (BES) intends to fund new research in response to the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Proposals are invited for short-term research projects aimed at addressing and/or mitigating the impact of aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs) during the pandemic.
The impact of COVID-19 on dentistry has been significant. As the industry slowly enters the phase of the “new normal”, dental professionals face a complex and evolving situation. There is an abundance of guidance available, but a common theme is the lack of robust evidence to guide the adoption of behaviours in practice. One area of contention has been that of the impact that AGPs have on dental service provision. Many questions have arisen about the behaviour of AGPs in dental practice and their interaction with SARS-CoV-2. It is with this in mind that the BES is calling for applications for research projects that will lead to a better understanding of aerosol generation and the mitigation of its impact in the COVID-19 era.
Application process
The applicant should submit a detailed protocol of the project, together with details of the equipment or materials required, on the application form which can be downloaded here and a copy of his or her curriculum vitae. The application should be accompanied by a supporting letter from the head of the department concerned or, if the work is to be conducted in a dental school, from the head of the school.
The BES is investing £40,000 in this research call. Applications for grants are invited up to the full amount of the fund and will be judged competitively. If applicants are approaching other organisations for the funding of their project, they are obliged to state this on submission of their application.
The closing date for proposals received under this call is 15 July 2020. Proposals will be accepted from UK-based applicants only. Applicants are not required to be members of the BES. Applications will be considered by the BES research panel appointed by the BES council, and successful candidates will be notified by the chief operations officer of the society. The BES aims to announce the outcome of applications by 31 July 2020. Owing to the volume of submissions anticipated, no feedback on applications will be given.
